What is silica sand?

Silica (SiO2) sand is generally the sand which you can get all over a beach and it also happens to be the most commonly used sand. It is most commonly composed by either crushing sandstone or else it is most commonly taken from natural occurring points or locations, such as beaches and river beds. The fusion point of purest form of silica is 1,760 °C (3,200 °F), however the sands which is used for extraction of silica exhibits a lower melting point due to impurities. For casting which requires high melting point, such as steels, at least 98% pure silica sand should be used; however for metals having lower melting points, like cast iron and non-ferrous metals, the sand have low purity can be used (between 94 and 98% pure).

History of Silica Sand


Silica sand is one of the oldest materials on earth and is has been around since the earth came into existence, and SiO2 i.e Silicon Dioxide is one of the materials which supported life on earth and it came from silica sand. The earliest forms of life on earth, as just mentioned, would make their skeletons and basic frames from silicon dioxide, and apart from that prehistoric plants also used it as support structures for their existence. Later on after thousands of years, the ancient natives of Rome also used SiO2 in the form of sand to provide immense strength to concrete and to make the quartz crystals used in jewelry wore by those people. Approximately around the same time period Hindu Monks would make the use of silica sand as to create patterns which was an integral part of their religious ritual. These religious rituals were the signature of that era. The tradition of creating patterns from silica sand however continues even till today. The Venetians of Italy mastered the art of glass blowing and deployed the use of Silica and silica sand in glass making.

Who did  Discover Silica Sand?


Jons Berzelius (1779-1848) discovered Silicon Dioxide SiO2 in 1824. He happened to be a Swedish chemist and the great scientist John Dalton was his mentor. He was well known for emerging with the theories of the ion and ionic compounds. He endeavored to sort accurate and precise quantitative measurements and made sure the purity of chemicals. He gave the exact fundamental components of many compounds and in 1826 he issued a table of atomic weights which is very much similar to the one we use today.
